Emerald Cedar (Thuja occidentalis 'Smaragd') is a narrow, upright evergreen conifer that holds its rich green colour throughout the year, including winter. It typically reaches 3 to 4 metres tall and about 1 metre wide at maturity, making it well suited for hedges, screens, and tight spaces. It is widely grown across Ontario and performs reliably in most landscape conditions.
Growing Requirements
🌍 USDA Hardiness Zone: 3-8
☀️ Light: Full sun to part shade
💧 Water: Water regularly during the first two growing seasons; established plants tolerate brief dry periods but prefer consistent moisture.
Care Instructions
- Planting: Plant in well-drained soil with adequate spacing of at least 60 to 90 cm apart for hedging, or as directed by intended use.
- Pruning: Prune lightly in late spring or early summer to maintain shape and control size before new growth hardens.
- Fertilizing: Apply a balanced slow-release granular fertilizer formulated for conifers in early spring before new growth begins.
- Winter: Hardy to zone 3, but burlap wrapping is recommended in exposed or windy sites to prevent winter burn on foliage.
