Buxus microphylla is a compact, slow-growing evergreen shrub with small, glossy dark green leaves that may bronze slightly in winter. It is commonly used for low hedges, borders, and formal shaped plantings. Most cultivars are well suited to Ontario conditions and tolerate a range of soil types.
Growing Requirements
🌍 USDA Hardiness Zone: 4-9
☀️ Light: Full sun to part shade
💧 Water: Water regularly during the first growing season to establish roots; once established, it is moderately drought tolerant.
Care Instructions
- Planting: Plant in well-drained soil in spring or early fall, spacing plants 30 to 60 cm apart depending on intended use.
- Pruning: Prune in late spring after new growth has hardened off to maintain shape and encourage dense branching.
- Fertilizing: Apply a balanced slow-release granular fertilizer in early spring before new growth begins.
- Winter: Hardy to Zone 4, but burlap wrapping in exposed sites helps prevent winter burn from wind and sun.
