Assorted apple trees are deciduous fruiting trees suited to Ontario's climate, typically reaching 3 to 6 metres in height depending on rootstock and variety. They produce fruit in summer to fall, with flavour, colour, and ripening time varying by cultivar.
Growing Requirements
š USDA Hardiness Zone: 3-8
āļø Light: Full sun
š§ Water: Water deeply once or twice a week during the first two years; established trees need watering during dry spells.
Care Instructions
- Planting: Plant in full sun with well-drained soil, spacing trees at least 4 to 6 metres apart depending on rootstock.
- Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring while dormant to remove crossing branches and maintain an open canopy for air circulation.
- Fertilizing: Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring before bud break, avoiding excess nitrogen which promotes leafy growth over fruit.
- Winter: Most varieties sold in Ontario are hardy to zone 3 or 4; no winter protection is needed for established trees in typical Ontario conditions.
- Pollination: Most apple varieties require a second compatible apple variety nearby for cross-pollination.
