Ā
A multi-graft apple tree with four different apple varieties budded onto a single rootstock, allowing harvest of multiple apple types from one tree. It is well suited to smaller yards where space for multiple trees is limited. Varieties grafted onto these trees can vary.
Growing Requirements
š USDA Hardiness Zone: 4-8
āļø Light: Full sun
š§ Water: Water deeply once or twice a week during the first growing season; established trees need about 1 inch of water per week during the growing season.
Care Instructions
- Planting: Plant in well-drained soil in a full-sun location, setting the tree so the graft unions remain above the soil line.
- Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring before bud break to maintain an open canopy and remove crossing, damaged, or diseased branches; take care not to remove any of the four graft limbs unintentionally.
- Fertilizing: Apply a balanced 10-10-10 fertilizer in early spring before new growth begins, following package rates based on tree age and size.
- Winter: Hardy to zone 4; no winter protection is typically needed in Ontario, though young trees benefit from a tree wrap on the trunk to prevent frost crack and rodent damage.
- Pollination: While some of the grafted varieties may be partially self-fertile, planting another apple variety nearby will significantly improve fruit set across all four grafts.
